Kauai

We've spent more time on Kauai than any other one of the Hawaii Islands, so it's the one island that we know like the back of our hands.

Kauai is also known as the Garden Isle and is the oldest of the main islands. Kauai really is almost like a huge garden, filled with flowers and tropical vegetation that you've probably never even seen before.

The island of Kauai has a lot of natural beauty... it has had a lot of time to grow and develop into what it is today. Some of the things that are must-sees on the island include the Waimea Canyon, which is basically the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the Na Pali Coast, which has some of the world's highest ocean cliffs.

While we were in Kauai, we stayed on the Poipu coast, which is on the South coast. We were able to rent snorkeling equipment (for almost nothing) and snorkel around the beaches right there. And, the snorkeling was awesome! I'd recommend taking an excursion out to some of the better snorkeling areas in Hawaii, but the underwater views in Poipu are incredible and it won't cost you much at all.

And if you are lucky, as we were, you will see monk seals sunbathing on the beaches! We saw a couple of seals one day that crawled up on the beach and decided to sunbathe for a few hours. People are allowed to get about 20 feet away, but no closer. Hawaii is very protective of the seals, people aren't allowed to get too close.

We did get some video footage of the seals on shore which we will be posting very soon on this site. (We will announce it in our newsletter when we post the video)

If you want to do a helicopter tour, do it on Kauai.

When you visit Kauai, you've got to take a helicopter tour! This is the best island to do the helicopter tour on. It's impossible to get to some of the areas on the island that the helicopter can take you to. It is one of the more expensive excursions that you can do on the island, but it is worth doing at least once.

For instance, the only way to get a good view of the Na Pali Coast is by boat or helicopter... but the view from the helcopter is much better. Just flying over the Na Pali Coast itself is worth the trip.

Movies Filmed on Kauai

There have been a lot of movies filmed on Kauai. Some of the more famous movies include Tears of The Sun, all 3 of the Jurassic Park movies, Lord of the Flies, Mightly Joe Young, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are many more, those are just a few of the more popular ones.

A few of the tours we went on pointed out certain areas of the island where some of these movies were filmed, but if you are really interested in a tour dedicated to showing you where just about every movie that was ever filmed in Kauai, check out this Hawaii movie tour website.

Wailua River Valley

An excursion up the Wailua River Valley is another adventure you'll want to do while in Kauai, especially if this is your first time on the island. .At the end of the trip up the river, you'll arrive at the Fern Grotto. The whole way to the Fern Grotta and the trip back, you'll be entertained... lots of things to look at and the guides on our excursion sang and danced for us!

All in all, Kauai is probably the most scenic of the Hawaii Islands... but there are also plenty of activities to do on the Island. Just don't waste any time once you arrive!
